Empower Yourself: Tips to Fight Fraudulent Activity

Wed, 03/27/2024 - 16:31 Fraud prevention

We're committed to your financial security and well-being. In today's digital age, unfortunately, scams and fraud attempts are on the rise. This blog post aims to educate you about some common tactics scammers use and provide tips to help you stay safe.

Here are some of the most frequent scams to be aware of:

  • Phishing: Scammers impersonate legitimate companies (banks, credit card providers, government agencies) through emails, texts, or phone calls. They try to trick you into revealing personal information like passwords or account details by creating a sense of urgency or offering fake incentives.
  • Imposter Scams: Similar to phishing, scammers pretend to be someone you trust – a family member, friend, authority figure, or even a potential employer. They might create fake social media profiles or use technology to mimic real voices. Their goal is to gain your trust and then request money or personal information.
  • Investment Scams: Be wary of unsolicited investment offers promising high returns with little risk. Scammers might pressure you to act quickly or push fake investment opportunities.
  • Overpayment Scams: This often occurs in online marketplaces or when selling personal items. The scammer sends you a fake payment exceeding the agreed-upon amount and asks you to return the "overpayment."

Here's how you can protect yourself:

  • Never share personal information through email, text, or phone unless you're absolutely certain of the sender's legitimacy. Contact the company directly through a trusted channel if unsure.
  • Be wary of unsolicited offers – if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do your research before investing or committing financially.
  • Verify sender information – check email addresses and phone numbers carefully for inconsistencies. Legitimate companies won't pressure you for immediate action or payment through unusual methods (gift cards, wire transfers).
  • Strengthen your passwords and use two-factor authentication whenever possible.
  • Don't click on suspicious links or attachments.
  • Report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities and Stock Yards Bank & Trust.
