Sean Mumaw, J.D. | Trust Counsel
(502) 625-1605 | Sean.Mumaw@syb.com

As we welcome the new year, we are excited to introduce Sean Mumaw, our new Trust Counsel who joined our team in October 2024. With more than 20 years of legal expertise, Sean brings a wealth of knowledge in estate planning, business succession and tax strategies, making him an invaluable asset to our clients and our institution.

Sean's career has been marked by a commitment to helping clients navigate the complexities of financial and estate planning. He understands that each client has unique needs and aspirations, and his approach is centered around active listening and personalized guidance. By taking the time to understand his clients' circumstances, Sean crafts tailored strategies that align with their specific financial goals.

Before joining Stock Yards Bank, Sean built a strong reputation in the legal field, earning recognition as one of Louisville Business First’s 20 People to Know in Law in 2021. His active involvement in professional organizations, including the Kentucky Bar Association, Indiana Bar Association, and the Estate Planning Council of Louisville, reflects his dedication to continuous learning and collaboration within the industry. He earned his Political Science degree and Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville.

In his initial months at Stock Yards Bank, Sean hit the ground running in making significant strides working with Bank colleagues and clients on new and existing projects.  When asked about his accomplishments in the fourth quarter of 2024, Sean downplayed his individual efforts and focused on team wins (though he did humorously note, “I learned where the coffee was!”). This lighthearted remark speaks to his eagerness to dive into ongoing projects and integrate himself within the team from day one.

Looking ahead to 2025, Sean's primary goal is to visit all of the regional offices to develop relationships and build rapport with the advisors. "I want to ensure that if or when they need me, they don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call," he explained. This proactive approach to relationship-building aligns perfectly with the collaborative culture at Stock Yards Bank, where all advisors share a common goal—providing the best client service possible.

Sean was drawn to Stock Yards Bank for several reasons. The institution's rich history and the opportunity to work alongside advisors he has known and collaborated with for decades were particularly appealing. "This role was ideal because I get to continue to work with the people I know, while expanding that base as I meet new colleagues, while being able to to continue to focus on the legal issues that interest me," he shared. The size and strength of the team, combined with the opportunity for professional growth, were factors that led him to embrace this new chapter in his career.

One piece of advice Sean emphasizes for clients is the importance of documenting their wishes. "Many clients lead their lives with the thought that ‘my kids know what I want,’ but often, after the fact, the kids don’t know," he cautioned. Sean encourages clients to sit down with their advisors at Stock Yards Bank to facilitate important discussions about their wishes, ensuring that their intentions are clearly communicated and understood.

When it comes to investment philosophy, Sean advocates for seeking the guidance of qualified investment advisors. "Get the advice of a qualified investment advisor and do what they say," he advises. He believes that while social media platforms may offer quick fixes and entertainment, they should not be relied upon for serious financial advice. Instead, he encourages clients to consult trained professionals who can provide informed and reliable guidance.

Outside of his professional life, Sean enjoys a rich tapestry of personal interests. A Southern Indiana native, he moved to Louisville at the age of 13. He finds joy in watching his two college-age kids grow, and he has recently taken up learning to play the guitar. Sean also has a soft spot for animals, with a 100-pound lap dog named Rufus, a rescue from the Humane Society.

Travel is another passion, and Sean has set a bucket list goal to visit all seven continents, with Asia, Australia, South America, and Antarctica still on his list. His love for live music and cheering on his favorite sports teams adds to the vibrancy of his life outside of work.

As Sean Mumaw embarks on this exciting journey at Stock Yards Bank, we are thrilled to have him on board. His dedication to excellence, commitment to client relationships, and extensive legal knowledge will undoubtedly contribute to the success of our clients and the firm as a whole. Welcome, Sean, to the Stock Yards Bank family!
